Abstract Quinsam Coal Corporation operates Quinsam underground coal mine located at Campbell River on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Quinsam Coal Corporation is wholly owned by Hillsborough Resources limited which is traded on Toronto Stock Exchange.
The mine is located some 25 km north-west of Campbell River on Vancouver Island and employs 55 people. It produces clean burning thermal coal for the cement industry and power generation. Depending on customers demand, the annual production varies between 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes of raw coal, and 420,000 to 490,000 tonnes of clean coal at 70% coal processing yield. Being an underground coal mine, Quinsam Coal operates under the corporate mission statement "safety is job no. 1", i. e., production does not take precedence over safety. It helped the mine to achieve exceptional safety record, winning four years in a row the 'Small Mines Safety Award" in BC, and the prestigious and nationally reknowned John T. Ryan Safety Award.
The coal measures consist of two mineable coal seams #1 and #3 up to 3.4 meters in thickness. the mining method is room and pillar retreat mining with its variants depending on encountered geological/geotechnical conditions. The mining panels are developed either down dip or on strike with five roadways. coal is transported to surface via belt conveyor. Winning of coal is done by remote controlled Joy continuous miners and shuttle cars. Roof bolting is done by two-boom Fletcher roof bolters. Coal processing utilizes heavy media vessel and water only cyclones. Specially designed coal hauling highway trucks transport clean coal to storage facilities where the coal is loaded onto barges and barged to customers. The
markets are domestic and offshore.
