Meeting the Challenge of Goro

CIM Vancouver 2002
Abstract In 1999, Inco constructed a pilot plant for extracting nickel and cobalt from the large laterite nickel deposits in the South Province of New Caledonia. At the time, Inco was criticized for adopting too cautious an approach to hydrometallurgical technology for nickel extraction.

While the experiences of other producers have subsequently supported the pilot plant approach, a host of other issues and challenges need to be taken into account to ensure success in a major offshore project of this scale – particularly on an island with little industrial infrastructure.

This presentation will review the various challenges of our Goro project and how Inco is proposing to deal with them.
