Present and Future Trends in High Desity/Paste Tailings Surface Disposal

CIM MineSpace 2001
Ted Lord,
Abstract High density and paste tailings technology has been around for many years but has just recently started to make major inroads into surface disposal of tailings. This technology has been used for underground backfill quite extensively, but to a much lesser extent in surface disposal. With increased environmental and political pressure to eliminate or decrease the size of tailings ponds, many mines are exploring this technology to eliminate/lessen tailings ponds. The paper explores global examples of the present surface use of this technology, research in the field and future trends in metal, coal and oil sands mining.
