The CIM Oil Sands Branch celebrated its thirtieth anniversary this year. The branch calendar included nine technical presentations and four special events, including the annual bonspiel (128 curlers), golf tournament (160 golfers), thirtieth anniversary celebration - with special guest speaker Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake - and the ever-popular Student Night. All of the events received great feedback.
Proceeds from the CIM Curling Funspiel helped fund the Engineering Handbook Program at the University of Alberta. It also offered an opportunity to sponsor some of the junior curlers.
The annual CIM Golf Tournament raised funds for the Fort McMurray Public Library’s “Summer Reading Program” to benefit children in Fort Chipewyan, Fort MacKay, Anzac, and Fort McMurray.
This September, the branch will welcome Pat Druckenmiller, from the Royal Tyrrell Museum, who will give a presentation about dinosaur discovery in the Fort McMurray region.
Last year, the CIM Oil Sands Branch membership jumped to 278 and this year, the branch executive anticipates it will grow to 350 members. With so many companies planning continued investment and development in the oil sands, the CIM Oil Sands Branch is looking forward to an exciting future.
