Like many in this industry, CIM is readying itself for another challenging year on the economic front. Over the past eighteen months CIM has made adjustments on the staffing side to reflect this reality. We expect that some of this decreased capacity will be compensated for with enhanced technological tools and systems.
“In preparing our 2016 budget we had to re-examine all that we do to find opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings where possible, without diluting the high quality of products and services we provide to our members,” said CIM President Garth Kirkham.
Some of the changes at CIM also stem from us entering the operational phase of a five-year strategic plan, which has been shaped over the past twelve months with expert guidance from the Montreal-based consulting team at KPMG. “In crafting our strategic plan we drew from what CIM members and stakeholders identified as mission-critical priorities during our extensive two-year outreach phase preceding the planning stage,” said CIM Executive Director Jean Vavrek.
The following are some of the key changes and initiatives:
CIM Journal to become a digital publication
Going forward the CIM Journal will no longer be offered to members in a print format, but will be fully accessible for download digitally via the CIM Technical Paper Library (TPL) and via the OneMine digital library. This move will represent a significant saving in printing and mailing costs. The decision was supported by CIM’s Technical Publications Committee, which is headed by former CIM President Chuck Edwards, whose passion launched the journal back in 2010. To support our industry’s academic sector, in 2016 authors will have the option of publishing “preprints” of their papers reviewed and approved for publication in CIM Journal.
In the years since its inception the CIM Journal has become a very respected resource and a valuable product in CIM’s suite of member benefits and we are confident that we will be able to expand its reach to an even greater audience digitally.
The M4S show is postponed
CIM’s Mining 4 Society (M4S) show has been postponed for CIM Vancouver 2016 and CIM Montreal 2017. However, the M4S brand and program will continue, in particular, via the newly launched M4S website (a work in progress). The format of this event is being re-examined and a condensed version of the show is being planned for smaller venues such as CIM’s MEMO conference to be held in Sudbury in October 2016.
The renowned public education show – a popular mainstay at the CIM Convention since 2005 – is a very costly endeavour in need of a sustainable financial model. In the meantime, a steering committee has been established to look into the future viability, growth and sustainability of the M4S program.
Virtual MineMentor pilot project not renewed
Taken on as a one-year pilot project from the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) in December 2014, CIM will no longer be administering the Virtual MineMentor Program (VMMP). Over the course of the year it was established that while the objective of the program and the collateral materials in support of it were of very high quality, the tool itself required significant technological upgrades that would require considerable investment of time, human resources and money (in addition to a significant amount that was invested in 2015). It was determined that this investment would be difficult to justify in the current economic climate. Discussions are currently underway with other organizations to potentially assume ownership of the program. We encourage those mentor/mentee pairings that have already commenced to continue via email. For those mentees who currently have requests in the system, we regret that the tool is no longer operational.
Strategic Plan Steering Committees launched
As an offshoot of the operationalization phase of the Strategic Plan, four steering committees have been activated to address the following priority areas of development: Professional Development, the new CIM Community Engagement Tool, Mining 4 Society (M4S) and Membership. These committees are comprised of a variety of industry experts and each will include a CIM Council member and CIM Staff lead. Progress will be reported back to the CIM Council. A more extensive report on CIM’s Strategic Plan will be released in the coming months.
New “Exploring Leading in Mining” Program
Laurentian University’s Goodman School of Mines, in collaboration with CIM and course developer Rosie Steeves, will be launching an abridged version of CIM’s year-long Leading in Mining (LIM) program – CIM’s flagship professional development program designed specifically for mining, materials and minerals industry professionals. Adapted to service a more local clientele that may not have the time to commit to the year-long program, the abbreviated edition will run approximately three months. The program will offer many of the same features of the long program including self-assessments, group workshops, coaching expertise, teleconference “check-ins” and relevant assignments. The first cohort is scheduled to begin in March. More details will be available shortly on cim.org and on the Goodman School of Mines websites.
