Coal and Oil Sands Division - Terms of Reference

The purpose of the Division shall be:

1. To promote, within the structure and policies of the Institute, the interests and welfare of the members associated with the coal and oil sands industries;

2. To promote the advancement of the theory and practice of the science, engineering and human aspects related to coal and oil sands including, but no limited to: exploration, determination of resource quality and quantity, mining, processing, reclamation, environment, tailings management, transportation, conversion, utilization, safety, training, economics, marketing; and

3. To facilitate the exchange of information and data on all subjects related to coal and oil sands among members of the Institute by:

    a. holding national, regional and local meetings of the Division to discuss and exchange information and data as described in 2 (above);

    b. organizing and sponsoring, solely as a Division or in conjunction with other Societies, Division, Districts or Branches of the Institute or in conjunction with other professional institutes and organizations: conventions, technical sessions, symposia and field trips;

    c. selecting papers, articles and abstracts for publication in:

      i. the CIM Bulletin,
      ii. proceedings of various functions,
      iii. special volumes;

    d. promoting and encouraging research and education, including public education, in coal and oil sands issues; and

    e. anticipating and fulfilling the knowledge and fellowship needs and expectations of Division members.
