In recognition of services to Canada's coal industry in providing safe work environments through expertise in the field of ground control for underground coal mines, and for the innovative development of new coal mining methodologies.
Peter Cain earned his doctorate from the University of Wales in Cardiff in 1982. He then moved to Canada to become the first professional employee at the CANMET Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory in Sydney, Nova Scotia, until 1998, with interludes working in the UK and as a consultant in Halifax, N.S. He obtained his Third and First Class Underground Coal Mine Officials certificates in Nova Scotia. In 1998 Peter began work at Smoky River Coal Limited, responsible for the design and safety aspects of underground strata control. He also obtained his Alberta Underground Coal Mine Manager's certificate. In 2000, he began work for Grande Cache Coal Corporation and was responsible for all aspects of underground mine design and planning, until the company went public in 2004. Since then, Peter has been working as a consultant in Iran, China, Columbia and Canada. He is currently participating in the re-drawing of Alberta's underground coal mine safety legislation.
