Coal Award - Winner 2004

Ahmed Salama Ahmed Salama
Edmonton, Alberta

"In recognition of his many years of leadership in the coal industry, working with many companies and research organizations to advance the practical knowledge in coal research, and as a long time supporter of CIM and the Coal and Oil Sands Division."

Dr. Ahmed I.A. Salama is a senior research scientist with CANMET Energy Technology Centre-Devon. His research interests are in the areas of systems optimization, process control, mathematical modelling, and computer applications in coal and oil sands industries.

Dr. Salama published over eighty scientific publications and sixty industry reports, and authored two chapters in two international engineering textbooks on digital control and control system engineering. He prime-authored a chapter on "Particle and Suspension Characterization" in the book "Suspension - Fundamentals and Applications in the Petroleum Industry." He has authored two articles on "Particle Size Analysis - Mechanical Techniques" in two Encyclopedias of Analytical Science and of Separation Science.

Dr. Salama's extensive research in coal established a scientific base for coal processing especially in the areas of mathematical modelling, flowsheet design, analysis, and optimization. He and his colleagues at the CETC-Devon were pivotal and fully responsible for an industry-wide project to evaluate the performance of most Canadian coal processing plants from 1991-1999.

Dr.Salama is Fellow and member of CIM, senior member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, U.S.A.) automatic control group, and Professional member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
