In recognition of his role highly significant professional accomplishments and in particular the role he played in revitalizing Cominco and the development of both the Polaris and Red Dog Mines.
Norman Anderson has been active in consulting, particularly due diligence consulting and evaluations for financial institutions and mining companies since 1987. He is currently president of the management consulting firm of Anderson & Associates, following a distinguished career in mine operations. A graduate of the University of Manitoba in geological engineering he began his career with Cominco in 1953 holding various engineering and planning positions at the H.B. Mine, Western Mines, and Sullivan Mine, he rose to become mine superintendent for several of Comincos mines. He then held various administration and technical positions, and in 1965 was appointed manager of the Magmont operation.
In 1970 he joined AMAX Inc. for which he was vice-president and general manager of AMAXs Missouri Lead Operating Company, and vice- president mining and lead business for their Lead/Zinc Division. In 1973 he rejoined Cominco rising to become chief executive officer of Fording Coal, a Cominco subsidiary, and then took on added responsibility as group vice-president for Potash and Nitrogen Fertilizer Operations. In 1977 he became executive vice-president and chief operating officer and in 1978 president and chief operating officer. In 1980 he was named chairman and chief executive officer, until 1986 when he retired from Cominco. Norman holds a number of company directorships. He is a Fellow and Chartered Engineer of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and a member of CIM and AIME.
