Material Development and the 21st Century Automobile
The technology underpinning the automobile will undergo greater change in the next two decades than at any other time since its early development. From novel propulsion systems to advanced lightweight structures, many of these advances rely heavily on new materials developments. Following a survey of the technological and societal landscape I will focus on some key advances in lightweight structural alloys, battery materials and fuel cell technologies. The talk will also demonstrate the interplay between materials and design in optimizing technologies.
